Hardwood Floors

Are Hardwood Floors Better than Laminate Floors?

Simply put – hardwood flooring is real wood, while laminate flooring offers a less expensive option that can mimic the look of hardwood. To compare which one of the two is the best option depends on a household’s priorities and unique needs. While cost plays a big factor, there are other factors to look at including durability, maintenance, installation, and more.

Let’s take a look at some of the common distinctions between hardwood flooring and laminate flooring to help you determine which option is right for your home.

Cost

One of the biggest selling points for buyers choosing between hardwood and laminate is the significant price difference. Laminate flooring by far is the least expensive way to achieve the look of hardwood flooring without the hefty price tag.

With classic hardwood flooring, pricing depends largely on the type of wood you choose and is considerably more costly to install. Laminate flooring is made from composite wood with the image of hardwood placed on the surface. Installing laminate flooring is about 50% less costly than hardwood.

Durability

Because hardwood flooring is made from a natural material, hardwood is more susceptible to wear and tear, scratching, and can be damaged from excessive moisture – especially in heavily trafficked areas of the home like the kitchen.

Laminate flooring, on the other hand, resists scratches and is resistant to moisture, making it more durable than hardwood.

Aesthetics

When comparing the look of hardwood flooring to laminate flooring, hardwood wins in this category by a long stretch. Timeless, classic hardwood flooring is gorgeous in any home and brings with it a look of luxury that laminate flooring can come close to, but can’t quite mimic.

Hardwood flooring is authentic and stunning when installed and maintained properly. It also ensures every plank is unique, as opposed to a laminate having identical planks repeating throughout the floor.

Repair

One of the advantages that hardwood flooring has over laminate flooring is that it will last for years and can be repaired by sanding imperfections and refinishing. Laminate doesn’t repair quite as easily, but individual planks that snap into place can be replaced quickly and easily.

Other Considerations

While hardwood flooring is beautiful, it’s important to take into consideration your household’s needs and lifestyle. If you have pets, children, and a busy home, hardwood will wear and tear faster overtime. Basements and bathrooms are also not an ideal place for hardwood flooring as moisture doesn’t fare well with authentic hardwood.

Homeowners choose laminate flooring for its ability to withstand foot traffic and for its water-resistant element. Hardwood flooring, however, automatically increases your home’s value as it’s an attractive component for buyers.

Laminate flooring is a popular, cost-effective choice for homeowners. It offers durability, easy maintenance, and a range of styles that mimic hardwood, stone, and other natural materials.

Made from high-density fiberboard with a protective top layer, it’s resistant to scratches and stains, making it ideal for busy households. Its floating floor system allows simple DIY installation over existing floors. While it’s less expensive than hardwood and provides a similar look, laminate has some drawbacks—it doesn’t retain warmth as well,
