Project Overview
A Calgary homeowner came to Deerfoot Carpet & Flooring looking to turn their unfinished basement into a space they could actually enjoy. Rather than leaving it underutilized, they wanted a comfortable, welcoming area for entertaining friends and family—with a custom design that would give the basement real personality.
After exploring their options, the Calgary homeowner selected glue-down luxury vinyl plank from Fuzion Flooring in the Cinder colour. Beyond installing LVP throughout the basement, the project included a custom herringbone layout and detailed stair work featuring a diamond design, integrated light cutouts, and custom framing around the lights.
The goal was clear: create a durable basement floor while leaning into the homeowner’s creative vision with plenty of contrast and a little extra wow factor.
Challenges
Installing flooring over a basement concrete slab comes with a few challenges. Concrete is rarely perfectly level, which can make certain flooring systems more difficult to install without extensive preparation.
For this project, glue-down luxury vinyl plank offered an advantage. Unlike rigid click flooring, glue-down LVP is flexible enough to follow minor contours in the concrete. The existing slab required some patching and levelling before installation. Still, it needed far less preparation than would typically be required to create a suitable surface for a click-format vinyl plank.
The flooring itself wasn’t the only challenge. The homeowner wanted the finished basement to feel completely customized, including a herringbone floor and a high-contrast diamond feature on the stairs. Existing stair lights also had to be carefully incorporated into the new flooring, requiring precise cuts and custom framing.
It wasn’t going to be your average basement renovation, and that’s exactly why Glue Down Luxury Vinyl Plank in Calgary was the right choice. It gave the Deerfoot Carpet & Flooring team the flexibility to bring the homeowner’s custom vision to life.
Solution
Deerfoot Carpet & Flooring worked with the homeowner from initial product selection through custom installation. The process included:
- In-Store Consultation
The homeowner visited Deerfoot Carpet & Flooring’s showroom to compare products, discuss their ideas, and find flooring that suited their style, budget, and durability needs. - Product Samples at Home
Samples were signed out so the homeowner could see how different flooring options looked in their basement before making the final decision. - Choosing the Right LVP
Together, the team and homeowner selected Fuzion’s glue-down luxury vinyl plank in Cinder. Its flexibility, durability, 100% waterproof performance, and easy repairability made it a practical fit for the concrete basement. - On-Site Planning
The installer met with the homeowner on-site to review the concrete, herringbone layout, stairs, light cutouts, and custom diamond feature before installation began. - Preparing the Concrete
Minor patching and levelling were completed to prepare the basement slab. Because glue-down LVP is flexible, considerably less preparation was required than would typically be needed for a click-format product. - Creating the Custom Layout
With no locking mechanisms limiting the plank placement, the glue-down luxury vinyl plank could be arranged into the Calgary homeowner’s custom herringbone design. - Finishing the Custom Stairs
The installation was completed with the custom diamond stair detail, carefully cut openings for the existing lights, and custom framing to give the staircase a polished finish.
Results
The finished basement gave the homeowner much more than a new floor. It turned an unfinished, underused part of the house into a space they could enjoy with family and friends while making better use of their home’s available square footage.
The Cinder-coloured LVP creates a strong foundation throughout the basement, while the custom herringbone pattern adds movement and visual interest. On the stairs, the diamond detail, custom light cutouts, and framing turn what could have been a simple transition between floors into a feature in its own right.
Most importantly, the homeowner didn’t have to choose between practical flooring and their creative vision. The flexibility and performance of glue-down luxury vinyl plank allowed Deerfoot Carpet & Flooring to create a durable, waterproof basement floor with the custom details the homeowner wanted.
The result is a basement that’s comfortable enough for everyday use, durable enough for real life, and unique enough to feel completely their own.
